Remember Our Ladies

Check out the Wayne County Women by Town through links above.

This exhibit from 2022 focused on notable Wayne County women. It was they who came before as examples and those of today. The exhibit features women such as:

  • Mildred Taylor, the first woman to represent Wayne County in the New York State Assembly. To this day, she remains the only woman to have represented Wayne County in the NYS Assembly. Taylor is also credited for the legislation naming the Rose as New York State’s official flower. LISTEN TO HER WEEKLY READIO ADDRESS RECORDINGS HERE.

  • Lisette Hotchkiss Parshall of Lyons, who established the Lyons Civic Club in 1902 and became the first woman elected to serve on the Lyons Board of Education

  • Antoinette Brown Blackwell, who became the first female pastor in the United States when she was ordained in South Butler on Sept. 15, 1853

  • Katherine Wykle, who was not only the first female mayor of Clyde but also the first female head of any local government body in New York state.
