A Historic Day on the Erie

The NYS Erie Canal officially opened for the 2022 season on Friday, May 20. Two days later, right here in Wayne County, it proved it is indeed alive and well.

On Sunday evening, the NYS Marine Highway Push Tug Edna A, "pushing" the 150-foot Barge 82 westward on the Erie Canal, exited Lock 26 and then docked for the night at Lauraville Landing in Clyde.

On Monday morning, the Tug and barge continued their westward journey. After a 1.5-hour cruise, the long unit arrived in Lyons and gently entered Lock 27. The locks were closed, the water quickly rose 12.6 feet, and the tug and barge were on their way to Albion. There the barge will be filled with cargo for the U. S. Military.

The tug and loaded cargo will soon return through Wayne County on the Erie Canal and eventually arrive at their destination, Quonset Point, Rhode Island.

The Push Tug Edna A and the Barge 82 are just two examples of history being made every day on the Erie Canal right here in Wayne County!
