On the morning of April 9, the 111th was marching with II corps in pursuit of Lee’s rear guard near New Hope Church. As the men of II corps were preparing to attack the rebel breastworks, an officer carrying the traditional white flag of surrender arrived on horseback, announcing a cease fire.

Twelve men of the 111th regiment die of disease in January, February and March; many more are convalescing in hospitals. The Confederates are in even more difficult circumstances, for food and clothing became scarce as the siege wore on.
