  Museum of Wayne County History
The Wayne County Historical Society
Founded in 1946, the Wayne County  Historical
Society is still going strong.  As a 501(c)3 nonprofit
organization, our 700+ members and business
sponsors support our mission to preserve and
present the history of Wayne County and the
surrounding area.
The museum is housed in the former Wayne County
Jail and Sheriff's residence,  built in 1856 and used
until 1961. Tour the 10+ rooms now used for gallery
space, with the 24 cell blocks attached to the back of
the home.  Learn the stories of  the inmates housed
at the Wayne County Jail, their life-size portraits
featured behind the bars.
Our current exhibition "Lawmen of the Old Jail" runs till
June 14.  Read about the men who served as sheriff
at the "Old Jail" and the criminals they captured.

Call or email the museum for more information.
Some of Our Services (What We Do)
Our professional staff and strong support of our
volunteers help make us an invaluable
educational resource in Wayne County.

In addition to operating the
Museum of  Wayne
County History,
which houses thousands of
artifacts, we maintain a
reference library
comprising over 1,000 volumes and an
archive
that includes maps, photographs, personal
documents, and business records.

Our Mission
The Mission of the Wayne County Historical Society is ...
Check Us Out & Join Our Efforts
A museum is first and foremost an educational institution.  Our curriculum comprises the objects
we are charged with preserving and holding in the public trust.  Every day, another piece of history
slips away.  Join us as a member, donor, or volunteer, and help us with our valuable work!
To encourage an appreciation of the history of
Wayne County through the collection,
preservation, and exhibition of artifacts.
To disseminate historical information about
Wayne County and the surrounding area.
To preserve the heritage of the area and help
individuals explore history and its meaning in
relation to their lives.
